Chesterton's Fence: Don't Remove a Rule Until You Know Why It's There

🌍 English Version
Imagine walking down a country road and finding a wooden fence across it for no obvious reason. Your first thought: "This is useless. Let's take it down." The English writer G. K. Chesterton argued, in essence: I won't let you remove it until you go and find out why it was built. Come back and tell me the reason, and then we can talk about removing it.

It sounds obvious, yet we ignore it every day: at work, at school, at home, even in the kitchen. We see a rule or habit that seems pointless, confidently scrap it… and later discover it was protecting us from a problem we could no longer see, precisely because the rule was preventing it.

🧩 The idea in brief

Most rules and procedures weren't created randomly; someone made them to solve a real problem at some point. The irony is that a successful rule hides its own reason: when it prevents a problem completely, the next generation assumes the problem never existed. So before you remove, ask. Once you understand, decide.

📚 Seven everyday examples

In each: the fence, the temptation to remove it, and the hidden reason.

1The new manager and the Sunday meeting

🚧 The fence: A 15-minute meeting every Sunday at 8 a.m. that seems repetitive and dull.
⚡ The temptation: A new manager cancels it in week one to save time.
🔍 The hidden reason: A month later, departments were double-booking and duplicating each other's work. The meeting wasn't for discussion; it set the week's priorities and prevented clashes. The smarter move was shortening it to ten minutes, not cancelling it.

2Locked classrooms at break time

🚧 The fence: A school rule that students can't stay in classrooms during break.
⚡ The temptation: "Some quiet students prefer to read inside. Why force them out?"
🔍 The hidden reason: Classrooms are unsupervised during break and had once been the scene of bullying and lost belongings. The thoughtful alternative: a supervised reading corner in the library, so quiet students get their calm and safety stays intact.

3Grandma's step in the lentil recipe

🚧 The fence: Grandma soaks and rinses lentils several times before cooking, and insists on it.
⚡ The temptation: "Lentils come packaged and clean now. That's an old habit."
🔍 The hidden reason: Rinsing removes dust, debris and sometimes tiny stones; soaking shortens cooking time and gives a smoother texture. You might skip the soak when rushed, but now you skip it knowing what you lose.

4The second signature on purchases

🚧 The fence: Any purchase above a set amount needs two signatures.
⚡ The temptation: "This is bureaucracy that slows us down. We trust each other."
🔍 The hidden reason: A second signature isn't distrust. It protects the employee from honest mistakes and from suspicion, and catches simple calculation errors. The fix: raise the threshold or speed up e-signing, while keeping the principle.

5A "strange" line of code

🚧 The fence: A new developer finds a line that waits two seconds before sending data, with no comment explaining why.
⚡ The temptation: Delete it to speed things up.
🔍 The hidden reason: The external system receiving the data rejects rapid back-to-back requests. After the deletion, syncing stopped entirely. Bonus lesson: when you discover why a fence exists, write the reason next to it to spare the next person the trouble.

6Finishing the medicine

🚧 The fence: The doctor prescribes an antibiotic for seven days.
⚡ The temptation: "I felt better on day three. No need for the rest."
🔍 The hidden reason: Feeling better doesn't always mean the cause is gone, and the doctor sets the duration based on the type of infection. If you have reasons to stop, ask your doctor or pharmacist first rather than deciding alone.

7Friday lunch at the family home

🚧 The fence: A fixed weekly gathering at the parents' home, even when everyone is busy.
⚡ The temptation: "We chat daily in the family group. Let's meet whenever it suits."
🔍 The hidden reason: The fixed date is what protects the gathering from busyness. "Whenever it suits" quickly becomes "only at Eid," and the grandchildren grow up without really knowing each other.

⚖️ But careful: not everything old is wise

The principle doesn't mean keeping everything forever. Some fences really have outlived their purpose: a rule written for a paper system that no longer exists, or a procedure for a problem now solved another way. The point is to remove the fence knowingly, not to keep it out of fear. Sometimes the answer is, "This fence is no longer needed," and you take it down with confidence.

❓ Five questions before removing any rule

1. Who made it? Find them and ask if you can; it's the fastest path to understanding.
2. When was it made? What was happening at the time?
3. What problem was it preventing? Picture it gone: what would go wrong first?
4. Does that problem still exist? Or does something else handle it now?
5. Can I adjust it instead of removing it? Shorten it, simplify it, or trial its removal for a short period.
✍️ Your exercise for today
Pick one rule at work or home that seems annoying or pointless. Don't change it yet. Ask someone who has been there longer than you, and write down the reason you discover. You'll often find a story you never knew.

Real improvement isn't quick demolition, nor blind attachment. It's respecting the experience of those before you enough to ask, and trusting your own mind enough to change things once you understand.
