A Safe Space for Everyone: Addressing Harassment Among Students

🌍 English Version
Every student deserves to walk into school feeling safe in body and dignity. Harassment in any form, whether words, innuendo, touch, or messages, takes that safety away, and can leave effects that last for years.

The good news is that most of this behavior can be prevented when home and school work together, and when we build a culture of respect that doesn't depend on constant surveillance. This article is a practical guide for educators and parents: how to understand the behavior, prevent it, and respond wisely if it happens.

🧩 What do we mean by harassment among students?

Any inappropriate word or action directed at a student without their consent that makes them feel embarrassed, afraid, or violated. Its forms include:

💬 Verbal: comments about someone's body or appearance, offensive nicknames or innuendo.
✋ Physical: unwanted touching, even when framed as a "joke."
📱 Online: inappropriate messages or images, pressuring a student to send something private, or posting content that hurts them.
🔑 The key standard: not what the person "meant," but how the other felt, and whether they consented.

🔍 Why does this behavior appear in some students?

Understanding causes doesn't excuse the behavior, but it helps us address it at the root:

🔸 Limited awareness of personal boundaries and others' privacy.
🔸 Seeking acceptance and attention from peers, copying what makes the group laugh.
🔸 Exposure to inappropriate content on screens without guidance.
🔸 Silence from those around, which is read as approval.

📚 Eight situations and how to handle them

In each: what happened, the educational response, and the hoped-for impact.

1A comment in the corridor

📍 Situation: A group of students make remarks about a classmate's appearance as they pass, and others laugh.
🛡️ Response: The teacher steps in immediately, calmly and firmly: "That kind of talk doesn't belong here." Later, they meet the group privately to discuss the impact of their words, without shaming anyone.
🌱 Impact: Students learn that hurtful words don't go unnoticed, and the targeted student feels seen and protected by adults.

2"We were just joking"

📍 Situation: A student touches a classmate in an unacceptable way during play, then says, "We were joking."
🛡️ Response: We teach a clear, simple rule: a real joke makes both people laugh. If the other person isn't comfortable, it isn't a joke. And we apply the agreed consequence without downplaying it.
🌱 Impact: The "just joking" excuse that hides many violations falls away, and consent becomes a clear standard for everyone.

3An inappropriate message in the class group

📍 Situation: An offensive image or message spreads in a students' online group.
🛡️ Response: We teach students three steps in advance: don't forward it, don't comment, tell a trusted adult right away. Adults then handle the content according to school procedures.
🌱 Impact: The spread stops at the first aware student, and everyone learns that forwarding is taking part in the harm.

4The silent bystanders

📍 Situation: Many students see the incident, but nobody acts for fear of becoming the next target.
🛡️ Response: We train students in safe "upstander" roles: standing beside the classmate, walking them away, or telling a teacher confidentially. And we make clear that reporting is protection, not "snitching."
🌱 Impact: When the perpetrator loses an audience, the behavior loses its appeal. An aware majority is the strongest prevention tool.

5A student comes to confide

📍 Situation: A student hesitantly approaches her teacher and says something happened that upset her.
🛡️ Response: The teacher listens calmly, without interrupting or interrogating, and says: "You did the right thing telling me. This isn't your fault." She doesn't promise to keep it secret, but gently explains she'll involve people who can help, then follows the school's student protection procedure immediately.
🌱 Impact: The student feels safe and believed, the first step in her recovery, and others are encouraged to speak up.

6The student who did it

📍 Situation: After checking the facts, it's clear a student crossed a classmate's boundaries.
🛡️ Response: We separate the student from the behavior: we deal firmly with the act, apply the set consequences, involve the parents, and provide counseling sessions that help the student understand boundaries, take responsibility, and make appropriate amends.
🌱 Impact: Punishment alone may stop the behavior temporarily; understanding and accountability create lasting change.

7Young children and "My body belongs to me"

📍 Situation: Early-years children who don't yet have the words to express discomfort.
🛡️ Response: Through age-appropriate stories and songs, we teach three messages: my body belongs to me, I have the right to say "no," and I tell someone I trust. We also teach the difference between a "happy surprise" that will soon be revealed, and a "secret" that makes them uneasy and must be told.
🌱 Impact: A child who knows their boundaries and trusts the adults around them is far safer.

8The open conversation at home

📍 Situation: Parents who want to know what their children are going through without it feeling like an interrogation.
🛡️ Response: A calm daily question in the car or at dinner: "What was the best thing today? And what bothered you most?" Then listening without overreacting or blaming, whatever the answer.
🌱 Impact: A child used to being heard about small things will come to you first about big ones.

👀 Signs worth noticing

A student may not speak up, but their behavior may change. Gently pay attention if you notice:

🔹 Sudden withdrawal or unusual sadness.
🔹 Avoiding a certain place, classmate, or going to school.
🔹 A clear change in phone use: anxiety when messages arrive, or hiding the screen.
🔹 A sudden drop in grades or concentration.

These signs don't necessarily mean harassment occurred, but they invite a calm conversation and deeper listening.

🚨 When must action be immediate?

If there is physical contact, a threat, repetition, private images, or an adult involved, there is no room for individual judgment: follow the school's child protection procedure immediately, inform the designated lead and the parents, and involve the school counselor and specialists to support the student. The priority is always the student's safety and privacy.

🌈 Six pillars of a culture of respect at school and home

1. A shared language: clear concepts everyone knows: personal boundaries, consent, and respect.
2. Safe reporting channels: a confidential box, a known go-to teacher, or a method students trust.
3. Smart supervision: adult presence in less-supervised places and times: corridors, break time, restrooms, and the end of the day.
4. Digital upbringing: an ongoing conversation about privacy and what should and shouldn't be sent.
5. Adults as role models: students learn respect from how we treat them and each other.
6. Home–school partnership: consistent messages, early communication, and mutual trust.
✍️ A step for you this week
If you're an educator: spend ten minutes with your students writing your class's own "Respect Charter" in their own hands.
If you're a parent: ask your child calmly tonight, "If someone ever bothered you, who would you tell?" Let their answer be the start of a conversation, not the end.

A safe school isn't built with cameras alone, but with aware hearts, attentive eyes, and doors open to conversation. When every student feels their dignity is protected, they're free to do what they came for: to learn, to grow, and to dream.
