How to Give Feedback That Actually Helps

🌍 English Version
Most of us have received feedback that stung and changed nothing: "You need to be more professional." "You're always late." "That presentation wasn't great." We nod, feel a little smaller, and walk away with no idea what to do differently. Good feedback is one of the most generous things you can give, at work, at home, or among friends. Here's a simple way to do it well, with examples you can use this week.

🚫 Why most feedback fails

Usually for one of three reasons: it's vague, it judges the person instead of the behavior, or it arrives too late. "You're careless" is a label, not feedback. People can't fix a label; they can only defend themselves against it. But they can change a specific action.

🧩 The formula: Situation, Behavior, Impact

1. Situation: When and where did it happen?
2. Behavior: What exactly did the person do or say? Describe it like a camera would, with no interpretation.
3. Impact: What effect did it have on you, the team, or the result?
➕ Then ask and listen: one question turns criticism into a conversation.

💼 Example 1: At work

❌ Instead of: "You never prepare for meetings."
✅ Try: "In this morning's client meeting, the budget figures weren't ready when they asked. We had to postpone the decision, and I could see they were frustrated. What got in the way, and how can I help make sure we have the numbers next time?"

Notice the difference: no "never," no label, and room for a reason you may not know. Maybe finance sent the data late.

🏠 Example 2: With your children

❌ Instead of: "You're so rude to your sister."
✅ Try: "At dinner tonight, when your sister was talking about her school trip, you laughed and said it sounded boring. She went quiet and looked upset. How do you think she felt? What could you say to her now?"

Children learn more from reflecting on the effect of their actions than from being told what kind of person they are.

🌟 Example 3: Praise needs precision too

We tend to be precise with criticism and vague with praise. "Great job!" feels nice but teaches nothing. Use the same formula when something goes well:

✅ Try: "During yesterday's training session, you paused and asked the quieter participants for their views. Two of them shared ideas we actually adopted. That's exactly the kind of leadership we need."

Now the person knows exactly what to repeat.

🌈 Five small habits that make a big difference

⏱️ Give it soon: feedback about something from three months ago feels like an ambush.
🤫 Correct in private: praise can be public; correction rarely should be.
🎯 One point at a time: a list of ten problems overwhelms; one clear point gets fixed.
❤️ Check your intention: before you speak, ask: am I trying to help, or to vent?
🔁 Follow up: when you notice improvement, say so. It closes the loop and builds trust.
✍️ Your challenge this week
Give one specific piece of positive feedback to a colleague, family member, or friend using Situation, Behavior, and Impact. Notice how differently it lands compared with a quick "well done."

Feedback isn't about being right. It's about helping someone see what they can't see from where they stand. Given with care and clarity, it becomes one of the quiet ways we make each other better.
