The IKEA Effect: Why We Love What We Build Ourselves

🌍 English Version
Have you noticed that the shelf you assembled yourself, despite its slight tilt and the extra screw you never found a place for, looks better to you than any ready-made one? That's not just you.

In 2011, researchers from Harvard and other universities ran experiments asking participants to assemble storage boxes or fold paper shapes. Then they asked: how much would you pay for what you made? Participants were willing to pay noticeably more for their own creations than for identical ready-made items. The researchers called it the "IKEA effect," after the furniture people assemble at home.

🧩 The idea, and its key condition

When we put effort into something, we become emotionally attached and value it more. But the experiments revealed a condition few people mention:

✅ Completion: the effect appears when people succeed in finishing what they started.
❌ Failure: those who didn't finish, or whose creation was taken apart, didn't become attached. Effort alone isn't enough; effort that ends in success is what creates attachment.

📚 Eight practical examples

In each: the situation, how to apply the effect, and the result.

1The child who refuses vegetables

🍽️ Situation: A child pushes salad away every day.
🤲 Application: Give them an easy task they can succeed at: washing cherry tomatoes, slicing cucumber with a safe knife, arranging colors on the plate. Then name the dish after them: "Salem's Salad."
🌟 Result: They eat it proudly and serve it to their siblings. Not because vegetables are healthy, but because they made it.

2Class rules written by students

📋 Situation: Behavior rules on the wall that nobody reads or follows.
🤲 Application: In week one, the teacher asks: "What kind of class would you love to learn in?" Students write suggestions in groups, vote, then design the poster and all sign it.
🌟 Result: When someone breaks a rule, classmates remind them before the teacher does: "That's our rule. We wrote it."

3A new procedure at work

⚙️ Situation: Management designs a new scheduling system and rolls it out finished. Staff resist and complain for months.
🤲 Application: Instead, present a 70% draft and ask a small team of employees to complete the remaining 30% and pilot it.
🌟 Result: Those employees become the system's ambassadors among colleagues, because part of it is theirs.

4The patient and the treatment plan

🩺 Situation: A diabetic patient receives a ready-made diet sheet and doesn't follow it.
🤲 Application: The dietitian sits with him: "What do you usually eat? What's hardest to give up?" Together they build a weekly plan where he chooses his own alternatives within medical limits.
🌟 Result: Nearly the same plan, but now he calls it "my plan" and sticks to it better.

5The family trip

✈️ Situation: Dad plans everything, and the kids complain the whole trip.
🤲 Application: Each family member picks one day or one activity and plans it themselves: the place, the time, the restaurant.
🌟 Result: Everyone is excited about their day, and patient through the others', because they expect the same patience for theirs.

6Trainees in a workshop

🎓 Situation: A workshop ends with a 40-page handout that ends up forgotten in a drawer.
🤲 Application: Instead, each trainee designs a "one-page action plan" during the workshop for applying what they learned at their own workplace.
🌟 Result: One page they made themselves gets pinned above their desk and applied. It's worth more than forty pages they didn't write.

7The school garden

🌱 Situation: A school struggles with vandalism and graffiti.
🤲 Application: Each class gets a small plot in the garden to plant and care for, marked with a sign bearing the class name.
🌟 Result: Students protect the place because it has become an extension of themselves. It's hard to vandalize the surroundings of something you planted.

8A small business and its customers

🛍️ Situation: A home sweets business sells ready-made boxes like everyone else.
🤲 Application: It adds a "design your box" option: the customer picks four of eight sweets, the ribbon color, and writes the gift card.
🌟 Result: The customer feels the gift is truly "from them," comes back to design another, and proudly photographs and shares it.

⚠️ The other side: when love for our work blinds us

🏗️ Clinging to a failing project: a manager refuses to stop a losing project because it's "his idea" and he worked on it for two years.
🚫 "Not invented here": a team rejects an excellent ready-made solution because they didn't create it, then spends months reinventing it.
💡 The cure: get an opinion from someone who didn't help build it, and ask yourself honestly: "If someone else presented this work to me, would I rate it as highly?"

🛠️ Five rules for using the effect wisely

1. Leave part unfinished on purpose: offer the draft, not the final product, and let others complete it.
2. Make the task winnable: effort that ends in failure breeds frustration, not attachment. Match difficulty to ability.
3. Real participation, not token: asking for input and then ignoring it costs more than never asking.
4. Link the result to its maker: a name on the dish, a signature on the poster, a mention in the meeting.
5. Watch yourself first: before defending your idea, make sure you're defending its quality, not your effort.
✍️ Your exercise this week
Pick one thing you'd normally decide alone and impose on your family or team. Complete only 70% of it, and ask them to finish the rest. Then watch the difference in their enthusiasm and commitment.

People don't support what's imposed on them; they support what they help build. When we leave room for others to make their mark, we lose nothing of our work. We gain people who will guard it with us.
