يُعدُّ عُسرُ القراءة أحد أكثر صعوبات التعلم شيوعًا ويظهر في أشكاٍل مختلفة ولكن الشكل الأكثر شيوعًا هو عُسر القراءة الصوتي الذي يؤثر على قدرة تقسيم الشخص للكلمات إلى الأجزاء المكوّنة لها. ينعكس هذا على القدرة على الفهم والاستيعاب في القراءة ويمكن أن يسبب أيضًا صعوبات في الإملاء والكتابة. وبما أن القراءة والكتابة عنصران أساسيان في معظم المناهج الدراسية، فقد يُواجه الأطفال الذين يعانون عسر القراءة من التخلف الدراسي إذا لم يتم تشخيص حالاتهم والتعامل معها، ذلك أنهم يواجهون مشكلات في تدوين الملاحظات والقراءة والواجبات المنزلية ومهام الكتابة والتقييمات.
