Integrity and Transparency: Doing the Right Thing When No One Is Watching

In public service, integrity is not just about rejecting bribes or following the rules—it is about moral clarity in every decision.
When you are offered a shortcut, or asked to overlook wrongdoing, or tempted to benefit from your position, your response in that moment defines who you truly are—not what’s written in your job title.

Integrity doesn’t need explanation—it needs action.

According to the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct for Federal Government Employees, integrity is not optional. It is a professional obligation manifested through:

• Avoiding conflicts between job responsibilities and personal interests.

• Refusing gifts or privileges that might influence decision-making.

• Reporting violations responsibly to protect the public interest.

• Respecting confidentiality and never exploiting internal information.

The real test of integrity lies in moments when no one is watching. Institutions that uphold integrity foster cultures of trust and long-term sustainability.
And because transparency walks hand-in-hand with integrity, employees must be clear in their actions, open in their intentions, and resistant to manipulation—because trust is built on honesty, not silence.
